Thinking through the moving image

UAL Academic Support workshop looking at using the moving image to assist with ideation and expression.

It’s been a very long time since I have thought about Edward Muybridge and his galloping horse footage!

Facilitator David McGovern instructed the use of iMovie to record and interrogate what we see and the ideas we may be exploring.

Within the workshop we made three versions of our small films.

The first film focused on what you see when you actively look around the room, what captures your attention. My response was to look at the ceiling and then to look low down. The contrast between the two positions was something I felt I could work with.

The second film looked at a focal point. What did we want to focus on consciously? This was made after the group had discussed Pace, Perspective and Position.

I chose to alter perspective, position, and time. I began at the top of the stairs, took a frame, then ran to the bottom and captured the counter view. This was repeated, getting closer and closer to the median, and ultimately into the overlap.

I even managed to get one of the students to take my photo while I sat in the chair. Amazing. The results were energetic and refreshing; no static images or pauses. How I might work with this in the future is a great question.
