Performance Workshop.
This workshop was presented by Sharon Young from Academic Support.
Fantastic… just a lot of discussion and exercises related to delivering a performance to an audience. Sharon started by asking the group to access the works by Yoko Ono, Marina Abramovic, and Francis Alys. This workshop could have been delivered way back in Unit 2! It was so informative that I feel cheated out of not having this input sooner. Especially considering that a performative element has always been part of the MA Fine Art course. Moan over!!
So, what did I take away from this workshop?
The idea of the artist performing to an audience but inviting responses and interaction from the audience.
Flux – the Flux movement, and I remember how it ties in with Mike Kelly.
This is a whole other world that I want to spend time researching. For now, I will simply note what to consider so that I can return to this post as a starting point when I have the opportunity.
· Not thespians.
· Subtle body positioning.
· Whitechapel Gallery (I should have this on my radar).
· Words may not be necessary.
· Why is my understanding of storytelling centred on words, not action?
· If I choose action and intervention, can I tell the story by involving the audience more? (Have them at the end of the ribbons??)
· Brechtian Technique?
· Participation – Claire Bishop. What is it and what isn’t it. How does it relate to storytelling?
