The Embodied Shaman

You are invited to take part in the making of the Shamanic Cloak — a collective, meditative act of creation. Join us in the quiet rhythm of stitching and listening, as together we contribute to the unfolding of the Collective Cloak.

Key words: Meditative Rhythm Stitching Listening Unfolding

Duration, 20 minutes.

I want to invite seven people from the audience to participate in the ‘circle’ for the performance.  However, seating for the audience to watch is essential for the overall performance. It may be that I ask seven people I know to be in my inner circle, and the invitation to watch is extended to the public.  Can this be fluid for the moment?

The performance will combine movement and sound. The soundscape will draw on elements from cycling journeys across Scotland, interwoven with the voices of the “elders” — the spirits. The live element features me using a manual hand-crank sewing machine to stitch ribbons onto a cloak. Seven participants will be invited to contribute by offering a ribbon for me to sew. Each contribution will trigger the next stage in the spoken journey of embodying the shaman. The performance ends with an invitation for the seven participants to wear the shamanic cloak, completing the ritual. Participants are welcome to take selfies if they wish.
