Print Project Day 2

Collaborating with Fiona De Beulat on colour monotypes created from inked wood blocks.

Mapping out the line work.

Having worked with the John Boyd painting yesterday, it seemed appropriate to carry it into today’s work.

Blue and ochre yellow.

The strong silhouettes gave a coherent framework that suggested the correct colour. Starting with yellow and then into the blue.

An intermediate state and one worth keeping.

On this plate, the final colour, dark brown, lifted the image and gave definition to the forms and faces.

Why did I choose red?

Boyd’s painting has strong red and deep orange. However as soon as I added the red, the block lost its fresh feel. There had been some discussion as to red as a colour and now I understood why it wasn’t an effective choice.

Trying to recover the plate.

Putting green over the red was the way through. It knocked the hue off the red and towards the brown annd also lifted the highlights. So the next decision was whether to add in more blue or to go with the brown.

Final monoprint image.

The brown was the right decision. Adding definition as well as depth into the frame.
