Print Project Day 1

As part of the first year MA Fine art printmaking and drawing came together to explore image making.

‘ Bring in an A4 image that can be worked from … it doesn’t matter what and it’s about exploring other mediums ‘ was the information given.

This was an image gathered from my trip to Scotland in June. I decided I would work with this to just see where it took me.

It was as if I fell into the picture. The simplicity of the composition with its strong outlines and bold colours was … I thought, the beginnings of an abstraction.

Starting with the ‘moon face’ and allowing myself to progress beyond the circle. With limited inks and oil pastels as well as some hand sanitiser, I thought I’d just flow with colour.

But something else began to emerge. The paper was large and from a roll so it had an inherent curvature. I decided that this held shape and form that allowed for scalpel cutting specific shapes into the image. This takes it away from being a simple ‘reproduction’ of the painting. The curled edges and slashes of white were surprising. Once I had finished the colours I went back into the image and carved strong shapes following the lines.
