How to print the “Shaman- Pattern”?
Creating the pattern on my Swedish tracing paper would be as simple as printing a digital file in the same style as my Weyward Sisters.
However, I want the person who presumably ‘buys’ the pattern to be able to sew directly from the paper, so giving the pattern a tactile feel of fabric is essential. I know the Swedish paper is sturdy enough for making toiles in garment construction, but it is very plain in colour. I want more from the paper.
I am also conscious that I want this to be a cost-effective exercise. I could send off for fabric to be printed, but that is not the way my practice works.
Printing out the pattern design onto plain paper will let me see the scale and size of the whole thing.
Could I develop the pattern using a set of Collograph plates that allow me to print directly on the paper? This is a good idea and easier to control than using mono-printing. Yes, the mono-print process would be individual and gestural, but I want to think about the concept of multiples.
Additionally, using acetate stencils is effective, but it is time-consuming, and the stencils require frequent cleaning. Given that I have only three or four print colours, I can be clever with my stencil/collograph blocks.
I could use sheets of Mulberry paper as a vivid base colour. If I get a sheet or two of green, I can try that out. That’s worth a thought.
