Camberwell College of Arts, UAL MA Fine Art Research Show
Fri 6 Dec, 11am-9pm, Sat 9 & Sun 8 Dec, 12-6pm
Visited the Research festival on Sunday. Managed to get there well before dismantling began.
This was my opportunity to see what 23/24 MA students had been working on. I thought it might give me a head start on expectations for Unit 3 next year.
The work was substantial in quantity and showcased a variety of techniques. I didn't engage with the performance art; I arrived too late for much of it. Overall, it was encouraging to see this work. I suspect they have been working to a tight brief and a short deadline to create the items on display. The quality of some pieces was not quite as polished as others. But who am I to say this? It’s going to be me on show next year, so I should take note and ensure I allow time to produce the final piece.
The mechanism for playing flipbooks captivates me right from the start. I appreciated the choice of imagery presented—it was drawn from old films, featuring headshots and screams. The material generated tension.
My only criticism was the venue and space. It felt claustrophobic and dark. I wanted to see the work but found myself squinting into the corners. Maybe this was simply because I had arrived whilst a performance was on? But still, it is noteworthy.
